Almighty blessed the couple Vrinda Rai and Krishnaraj Rai with a baby girl on Thursday, November 1, 1973, in Mangalore. The couple, in consultation with their priests and elders, named their baby girl, Aishwarya. They would also fondly call her "Gullu."
Soon the couple moved to Bombay (Mumbai) and settled there with their two children, their son Aditya Rai and daughter Aishwarya Rai.

Aishwarya is the youngest in the Rai family. Her father, Krishnaraj Rai, was initially in the Indian Navy; he later joined the merchant navy. Aishwarya's mother, Vrinda Rai, was a homemaker. The siblings would miss their father when he had to go on long voyages.
Aishwarya Rai did her schooling at Arya Vidya Mandir, in Santacruz, Mumbai.

The principal of Arya Vidya Mandir, Sudha Talwar, said that Aishwarya Rai excelled in academics, dancing, and singing and was an immensely talented girl. Aishwarya Rai joined school when she was three and half. She always ranked first except in her 10th standard, where she ranked second.
